Largest protests yet in Syrian city of Aleppo

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian security forces fired tear gas and live ammunition to disperse thousands rallying Friday in Aleppo in what activists said was the largest protest yet in a city that has largely remained loyal to President Bashar Assad during the country’s 15-month uprising.

The protest pointed to rising anti-regime sentiment in Syria‘s largest city, particularly after a raid on dormitories at the city’s main university killed four students and forced the temporary closure of the state-run school earlier this month.

The May 3 raid at Aleppo University was an unusually violent incident for the northern city, a major economic hub, where business ties and the presence of significant populations of sectarian minorities have kept residents largely on the side of the regime ? or at least unwilling to join the opposition.

On Thursday, some 15,000 students demonstrated outside the gates of Aleppo University in the presence of U.N. observers, before security forces broke up the protest.

Even bigger numbers took to the streets Friday. Aleppo-based activist Mohammad Saeed said it was the largest demonstration there since the start of the uprising. He said more than 10,000 people protested in the Salaheddine and al-Shaar districts alone and thousands protested in other areas of the city.

“The number of protesters is increasing every day and today saw the biggest protests,” said Saeed, adding that several people were wounded when government forces tear gas and live ammunition to try and disperse the rally.

The head of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdul-Rahman, said the protest showed “it’s a real uprising happening in Aleppo these days.”

Thousands of people across the country also staged anti-government rallies in solidarity with Aleppo. Friday is the main day of protests across Syria and this week’s demonstrations were dubbed “The Heroes of Aleppo University” in solidarity with the students.

Opposition activists said security forces opened fire in several other locations including the Damascus suburbs and the central city of Hama to disperse protesters and that the regime shelled the town of Rastan, which has been under the control of rebels since January.

The violence comes as the head of U.N. observer team in Syria cautioned that unarmed force alone cannot stop the bloodshed without genuine talks between the two sides that have been locked in a violent conflict for more than a year.

Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, the Norwegian head of the 200-strong observer team, warned Friday that no number of observers can achieve “a permanent end to the violence if the commitment to give dialogue a chance is not genuine from all internal and external actors.” He spoke at a news conference in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

International powers have pinned their hopes on a peace plan for Syria that special envoy Kofi Annan brokered in April. The plan paved the way for the U.N. observers, and it calls for a cease-fire and dialogue to stop 15 months of bloodshed.

The U.N. estimated in March that the violence in Syria has killed more than 9,000 people. Hundreds more have been killed since then as a revolt that began in March 2011 with mostly peaceful calls for reform has transformed into an armed insurgency.

Both sides have flouted the cease-fire, raising concerns that the peace plan is ineffective in a conflict where the violence is spinning out of control.

Ahmad Fawzi, spokesman for Annan, said in Geneva that the envoy would be visiting Syria soon, but did not give a date.

“We condemn in the strongest terms violence in all its forms by all parties,” Fawzi said. “This must come to an end for any political process to be launched and to have a glimmer of success.”

A high-ranking military adviser to U.N. Secretary Ban Ki-moon, Babacar Gaye, arrived in Damascus Friday.

But dialogue seems a distant hope. The opposition refuses to engage with the regime while the killings continue, and the government brands its opponents as terrorists.

Assad denies that there is a popular will behind the country’s uprising, saying foreign extremists are driving the unrest to destroy the country.

Two main activist groups, the Local Coordination Committees and the Observatory, said the opposition stronghold of Rastan again came under intense shelling as of Friday morning. Videos posted online showed thick smoke and shells slamming into districts in the town.

“I am more convinced than ever that no amount of violence can resolve this crisis,” Mood said in Damascus. He also said recent suicide bombs and roadside blasts were alarming. “I am concerned about the incidents where explosives, improvised devices are targeting innocent civilians, innocent people because it is not going to help the situation.”

On Thursday, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he believes that “alarmingly and surprisingly,” al-Qaida must have been behind the massive attack in the Syrian capital last week.

The twin suicide car bombings outside a military intelligence building on May 10 bore the al-Qaida-style tactics seen in neighboring Iraq. Some 55 people died and dozens were injured in the Damascus blasts.

Ban said that al-Qaida’s involvement in the region “has created very serious problems.”

He also noted that there have also been two attacks against unarmed U.N. monitors in Syria. His comments were made to students attending the annual Model U.N. Conference in New York.

Suspect arrested in Miss. highway shootings

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) ? Police have arrested a suspect in two fatal highway shootings in Mississippi that prompted warnings a fake officer might be pulling over victims.

Authorities said early Friday that the fears of an impostor turned out to be unfounded. Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain told The Associated Press that the suspect, James D. Willie, 28, had not been posing as a police officer in the shootings.

Willie was being held on charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault and rape and would be formally charged with two counts of capital murder, Strain said.

Willie was being held at the Tunica County jail in north Mississippi.

Willie was arrested Tuesday morning when authorities responded to a disturbance at an apartment. Tunica police found Willie with a woman who claimed he had raped her, a news release said. When Willie was arrested, authorities found a 9mm Ruger in his possession. Ballistic testing later found that it was the same gun used in the two highway shootings, authorities said.

Strain said Willie is a convicted felon, but he did not have details about his previous arrests.

Thomas Schlender, 74, of Raymond, Neb., was found dead in his car on Interstate 55 in Panola County on May 8 around 1:30 a.m. Lori Anne Carswell, 48, of Hernando, Miss. was found dead near her car on Mississippi Highway 713 in nearby Tunica County about 2:15 a.m. on May 11.

Strain said authorities developed several theories during the investigation and one of those was that someone could be posing as an officer to pull people over because there was no apparent reason for the victims to pull over.

“If we’re going to err, we’re going to err on the side of public safety,” Strain said. “The fact is that we got him off the street and people can go back to a level of comfort.”

Gov. Phil Bryant and Mississippi Public Safety Commissioner Albert Santa Cruz said in a statement early Friday that investigators spent hundreds of hours working the case and the state Bureau of Investigation and state crime lab used all the resources it had available.

“Our citizens have been terrorized by these murders and we worked tirelessly to resolve them,” Santa Cruz said.

Strain said it’s too early in the investigation to release details of how or why the motorists were on the side of the roads. He also declined to give a possible motive for the shootings.

Carswell just left work from Fitzgerald’s Casino, also known as the Fitz Casino, in Tunica County when she was killed, authorities have said. Schlender’s was driving from Nebraska to Florida to pick up his grandson, authorities said.

Shell casings were found at the scene of both shootings, authorities have said.

Chinese activist on flight to U.S.

Blind dissident Chen Guangcheng and his immediate family have left China on a flight to the United States. They are expected to arrive in Newark, N.J., Saturday evening.

Their departure caps off three weeks of roller coaster diplomacy that reached the very highest levels of Chinese government and the White House.

The human rights activist is best known for his fight against forced abortions and sterilisations under the One Child Policy.

He served a four year prison sentence for what are widely believed to have been trumped up charges before being placed under a brutal, extra-judicial house arrest in his hometown province of Shandong.

Several media outlets, as well as human rights supporters in the U.S., cited late May as a potential departure date if all rules for passport applications were strictly adhered to.

But on Saturday, social media reports surfaced that said Chen had left the hospital. By midday, Chen spoke to the AFP and the Associated Press to say he was at the airport with his family and while he had no details, he believed they would be leaving that day.

State Dept Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland confirmed that Chen and his family left China so he can pursue studies at an American university.

“We are looking forward to his arrival in the United States later today. We also express our appreciation for the manner in which we were able to resolve this matter and to support Mr. Chen’s desire to study in the U.S. and pursue his goals,” Nuland said.

His departure is in some ways bittersweet. His supporters by and large agree the only way he will be truly safe is outside China.

But for Chen, and dissidents before him, leaving is a compromise; he may be safer but he is also farther away from his cause.

Daring Escape Attempt On April 22, Chen made a daring and highly risky escape with the assistance of his wife.

After several days in hiding, after a car chase and near arrest by Beijing authorities, he sought refuge at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing on Friday, April 27.

U. S. Officials were then tasked with an unusual request from a known dissident in any country: Chen wanted to remain in China with guarantees of safety and the freedom to continue his work.

Unlike the more straightforward process of securing asylum, U.S. officials embarked on an effort to strike an unprecedented deal with the Chinese that would satisfy all sides.

Soon after Secretary of State Hilary Clinton arrived in Beijing to attend a previously scheduled economic conference, the US announced a deal. The plan was for Chen to be released to a local hospital and, after receiving medical treatment, move to Tianjin, a city just outside Beijing where he would be able to pursue his legal studies. According to the US, the Chinese agreed to offer assurances of Chen’s safety as well as investigate the past abuses committed against him.

Chen entered the hospital on Wednesday May 2. But within hours he changed his mind and the deal fell apart.

In numerous interviews over the phone with various media outlets, and in reports published online by his supporters, Chen said that he had misjudged the reality of living freely under Chinese rule.

He said he no longer felt that the safety of him or his family could ever be truly guaranteed. For that reason he wanted to leave China.

That sent U.S. officials into a tense period of re-negotiation while garnering international criticism for mishandling the case.

All the while, Secretary Clinton was in Beijing attending meetings with Chinese officials and participating in negotiations on Chen’s future behind the scenes.

The drama reached a high point when Chen made a public plea to be allowed to fly on Secretary Clinton’s plane when she left China. He also phoned into Washington to offer congressional testimony on his plight.

But whether China, which up until that point had not even acknowledged Chen’s escape (or, for that matter, that he had been abused under house arrest) would even consider allowing him to leave was unclear. In China, saving face is critical. For the government to continue to play along, when Chen had so radically changed the chess board, it would require a rare willingness to be seen as diplomatically flexible.

But, just hours before Secretary Clinton was scheduled to leave Beijing a second deal was reached.

The Chinese announced that Chen would be permitted to obtain a student visa that would allow him to go abroad. The U.S. promptly announced that he and his family would be given the appropriate visas without delay and confirmed that New York University had extended him an invitation to be a visiting scholar.

The Chen family would need to be issued Chinese passports to travel, a process that would take time. On Saturday, Secretary Clinton left China without them.

In large degree the ball was now in the Chinese government’s court.

As they waited, Chen continued to speak to the press. He voiced his outrage that his nephew, Chen Kegui, had been arrested and charged with attempted homicide.

Chen says he was acting in self-defense after local authorities attacked his house following Chen’s escape. Chen said he had been in regular contact with US.. officials, and he praised their efforts to help him. But he also expressed frustration that the process was taking so long. Bittersweet Departure

Recently, the Texas-based activist Bob Fu of ChinaAid has demonstrated that it is possible to protest from afar and make a different sort of impact. Whether Chen can do the same will be seen in New York, where he has said he will continue to study human rights law.

Chen Guangcheng leaves the country that sought to silence him. He also leaves his mother, older brother, nephew and others; friends and family he may never see again. In some ways it was his choice; in others it wasn’t .

What is clear is this: today, his new life begins.

Disco Queen Donna Summer dies at 63

NEW YORK (AP) ? Like the King of Pop or the Queen of Soul, Donna Summer was bestowed a title fitting of musical royalty ? the Queen of Disco.

Yet unlike Michael Jackson or Aretha Franklin, it was a designation she wasn’t comfortable embracing.

“I grew up on rock ‘n’ roll,” Summer once said when explaining her reluctance to claim the title.

Indeed, as disco boomed then crashed in a single decade in the 1970s, Summer, the beautiful voice and face of the genre with pulsating hits like “I Feel Love,” ”Love to Love You Baby” and “Last Dance,” would continue to make hits incorporating the rock roots she so loved. One of her biggest hits, “She Works Hard for the Money,” came in the early 1980s and relied on a smoldering guitar solo as well as Summer’s booming voice.

Yet it was with her disco anthems that she would have the most impact in music, and it’s how she was remembered Thursday as news spread of her death at age 63.

Summer died of cancer Thursday morning in Naples, Fla., said her publicist Brian Edwards. Her family released a statement saying they “are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy.”

Luminaries from Aretha Franklin to Dolly Parton and Barbra Streisand mourned the loss, as did President Barack Obama, who said he and Michelle were saddened to hear of the passing of the five-time Grammy winner. “Her voice was unforgettable, and the music industry has lost a legend far too soon,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Donna’s family and her dedicated fans.”

It had been decades since that brief, flashy moment when Summer was every inch the Disco Queen.

Her glittery gowns and long eyelashes. Her luxurious hair and glossy, open lips. Her sultry vocals, her bedroom moans and sighs. She was as much a part of the culture as disco balls, polyester, platform shoes and the music’s pulsing, pounding rhythms.

Summer’s music gave voice to not only a musical revolution, but a cultural one ? a time when sex, race, fashion and drugs were being explored and exploited with freedom like never before in the United States.

Her rise was inseparable from disco’s itself, even though she remained popular for years after the genre she helped invent had died. She won a Grammy for best rock vocal performance for “Hot Stuff,” a fiery guitar-based song that represented her shift from disco to more rock-based sounds, and created another kind of anthem with “She Works Hard for the Money,” this time for women’s rights.

Elton John said in a statement that Summer was more than the Queen of Disco.

“Her records sound as good today as they ever did. That she has never been inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame is a total disgrace especially when I see the second-rate talent that has been inducted,” he said. “She is a great friend to me and to the Elton John AIDS Foundation and I will miss her greatly.”

Summer may not have liked the title and later became a born-again Christian, but many remembered her best for her early years, starting with the sinful “Love to Love You Baby.”

Released in 1975, a breakthrough hit for Summer and for disco, it was a legend of studio ecstasy and the genre’s ultimate sexual anthem. Summer came up with the idea of the song and first recorded it as a demo in 1975, on the condition that another singer perform it commercially. But Casablanca Records president Neil Bogart liked the track so much that he suggested to producer Giorgio Morodor they re-record it, and make it longer ? what would come to be known as a “disco disc.”

Summer had reservations about the lyrics ? “Do it to me again and again” ? but imagined herself as a movie star playing a part as if she were Marilyn Monroe. So she agreed to sing, lying down on the studio floor, in darkness, and letting her imagination take over. Solo and multitracked, she whispered, she groaned, she crooned. Drums, bass, strings and keyboards answered her cries. She simulated climax so many times that the BBC kept count: 23, in 17 minutes.

What started as a scandal became a classic. The song was later sampled by LL Cool J, Timbaland and Beyonce, who interpolated the hit for her jam “Naughty Girl.” It was also Summer’s U.S. chart debut and the first of 19 No. 1 dance hits between 1975 and 2008 ? second only to Madonna.

Summer, real name LaDonna Adrian Gaines, was born in 1948 in Boston. She was raised on gospel music and became the soloist in her church choir by age 10.

“There was no question I would be a singer, I just always knew. I had credit in my neighborhood, people would lend me money and tell me to pay it back when I got famous,” Summer said in a 1989 interview with The Associated Press.

Before disco, she had already reinvented herself several times. She sang Motown songs with local groups in Boston as a teenager, then dropped out of school in the late 1960s and switched to pyschedelic rock after hearing Janis Joplin. An attempt to get a part in the musical “Hair” led her to get the principal role in Munich. She stayed in Germany for five years, worked in other productions and modeled.

Meanwhile, she was performing in operas, singing backup for Three Dog Night and other groups and releasing songs of her own. A marriage to Helmuth Sommer didn’t last, but the singer did hold on to her ex-husband’s last name, changing it to “Summer.” By 1974, she had met producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte and released her first album, “Lady of the Night,” to success in Europe.

Then came “Love to Love You Baby,” her memorable U.S. debut. Through the rest of the disco era she burned up the charts: She was the only artist to have three consecutive double-LPs hit No. 1, “Live and More,” ”Bad Girls” and “On the Radio.” She was also the first female artist with four No. 1 singles in a 13-month period, according to the Rock Hall of Fame, where she was a nominee this year but was passed over.

Musically, she began to change in 1979 with “Hot Stuff,” which had a tough, rock ‘n’ roll beat. Her diverse sound helped her earn Grammy Awards in the dance, rock, R&B and inspirational categories.

Summer said grew up on rock ‘n’ roll and later covered the Bruce Springsteen song “Protection.”

“I like the Moody Blues, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones as well as Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, the Supremes and Temptations,” she said. “I didn’t know many white kids who didn’t know the Supremes; I don’t know many black kids who don’t know the Moody Blues.”

Warwick said in a statement that she was sad to lose a great performer and “dear friend.”

“My heart goes out to her husband and her children,” Warwick said. “Prayers will be said to keep them strong.”

Summer later became a born-again Christian and was accused of making anti-gay comments in relation to the AIDS epidemic ? a particular problem for a woman who was and remains a gay icon. Summer denied making the comments, but became the target of a boycott.

Religion played an important role in her later life, said Michael Levine, who briefly worked as her publicist.

“Her passion in her life, besides music, was God, spirituality and religion. She held a bible study class at her home every week,” he said.

Summer released her last album, “Crayons,” in 2008. It was her first full studio album in 17 years. She also performed on “American Idol” that year with its top female contestants.

Summer is survived by her husband, Bruce Sudano, and three daughters, Brooklyn, Mimi and Amanda.

Business to business means the relation between the two businesses that is a business relation in which the end consumer is not involved. It is more popularly know by its abbreviation B2B. Business to business refers to the relation between more than one business institutes specifically for the marketing. This is in contrast to the other known marketing relations that exist between the business and the end consumer. Prior to the evolving of the term B2B, these kinds of relations between two enterprises are known as industrial goods marketing or capital goods marketing. These terms distinguish it from the business to consumer or B2C type of marketing.

How Does It Differ From B2C Marketing:

There are several major differences between the B2B marketing and B2C marketing. The involvement of so many people in the process of decision making in the case of B2B marketing makes it very complicated. On the contrary, in case of B2C, marketing only one person is responsible for making the final choice and when some special package is offered, involvement of only person facilitates quick buying decisions. Another major difference between the B2B business marketing and B2C type of marketing is that a business makes a buying decision when it needs the thing. When Personal Finance Software Might Help You Budget | Its Bharath

?Budget? is a bad word in some people?s minds. It brings to mind moderation and responsibility, which are often downers in a world filled with economic hardship. Instead of focusing on the doldrums of accounting, many people simply do their best to live within their means.

Some people feel that if they have never experienced financial hardship that they never will; however, it is impossible for anyone to see his or her future. Even the most consistent consumer who makes timely payments and has no debt can still encounter an emergent situation that completely upends his or her finances. Therefore, it is a good idea to plan and save. Keeping tabs on how money is spent allows individuals to make better choices about finances.

What is Personal Finance Software?

Personal finance software is designed for users of all income levels in order to track assets, investments, financial responsibilities and savings. Rather than hiring a personal accountant, this software is intuitive and easy to use for anyone, regardless of financial prowess. Chances are, a hired accountant will use software to help him or her manage an account, so paying one for a job that is easily done one?s self may be undesirable for some. While the use of personal finance programs is certainly not necessary for budgeting, many people find the ease of use and seamless integration of multiple accounts saves plenty of time. This useful tool is the key to budgeting in many households, but there are several companies that offer finance software. With so many options, which is the most desirable of available suites?

personal finance software

Free versus Paid Software Packages

Personal software ranges in price from free to a paid monthly subscription. Each offers similar features, but users will find that paid packages typically offer a broader range of services than a free package does. The most important thing to look for is ease of use. Complex programs may be suitable for those with an in-depth knowledge of finances or with assets spread around many accounts and institutions; however, a simple program suffices for most people.

Features to Consider

One of the most important features to look for is an online banking option. This allows the software user to access his or her payments, transactions and accounts online. While some people may find online access unnecessary, some software is compatible with mobile phones. These enable a smartphone to instantly upload purchase prices to a cheque book ledger and download the latest stock reports without having to sit down at a personal computer, providing unmatched convenience.

Investing features are important for individuals who are already active or plan to be active in the stock market. Investment-focused features in a personal finance suite may increase its price, but the ease in which a user can track his or her portfolio may make this a must-have option. From retirement savings plans to private stock investments, people can buy, sell or reallocate their shares with some personal finance software suites.

Summary

A personal finance program should allow its user to easily plan ?for taxes, loans, savings and investments. While users who simply want to track spending may never use this feature, those who have to juggle money or live pay check to pay check will find that this feature helps to keep their budgets on track. Additionally, the software should give an easy overview of finances, which illustrates all of earnings and spending in a clear, organized manner.

Mark Hunt injured, so Lavar Johnson jumps at chance to fight Stefan Struve at UFC 146

After earning a $65,000 bonus for Knockout of the Night on May 5 after stopping Pat Barry in the first round at UFC on Fox 3 in East Rutherford, N.J., you couldn’t blame Lavar Johnson had he chosen to go on vacation. It was his second KO win in the UFC in four months and both times, the knockout came on national television.

He chose to take only a few days off, however, before returning to the gym on Monday. It paid off for him big-time on Thursday when he was offered, and quickly accepted, a contract to fight Stefan Struve on May 26 on the main card of UFC 146 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.

Mark Hunt injured a knee in training and had to withdraw from the fight with Struve on the all-heavyweight card next week. The UFC offered the bout to Johnson, who came out of his first-round win over Barry unscathed.

He said he never hesitated in accepting the offer.

“This is what we do and it’s my job to fight,” Johnson told Cagewriter. “They called me up and I’m still in good shape. A fight is a fight, no matter who it is, or what. My job is to take the fight. I jumped right on it.”

Johnson said he weighs 250, so he won’t even have to worry about cutting weight to make the 265-pound limit for his fight against Struve.

At 6-11, Struve will have a seven-inch height advantage over the 6-4 Johnson, but Johnson insisted it won’t matter.

“His reach is 83 and mine is 81 or 82,” Johnson said. “I’m faster and I hit harder. I’m aggressive and I’ll be right there in his face.”

He was aggressive against both Barry and Joey Beltran, whom he knocked out on Jan. 28 at UFC on Fox 2. He took a few hellacious leg kicks from Barry in the early moments of the May 5 fight, but said he didn’t feel them.

When friends brought it up to them, he acted surprised, saying he checked the kicks. But when he looked at the film, he realized he was hit full bore by Barry, one of the hardest kickers in the sport. But Johnson had prepared for Barry by training with kick boxer Carter Williams, himself a great kicker.

“That’s what happens when you train with Carter,” Johnson said, chuckling. “Eventually, you don’t feel a thing.”

He was a virtual unknown to UFC fans as 2012 began, known primarily as the fighter who was shot in the abdomen during a Fourth of July family reunion a few years ago. But if he beats Struve, he’ll be 3-for-3 in 2012 with seven months still to go.

He hasn’t heard much from UFC president Dana White, but said it didn’t matter.

“My bonus check said enough for me,” he said.
